Ambassador's Greetings

Ambassador Kusaka

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the official website of the Embassy of Japan in Australia. My name is Sumio Kusaka and I have assumed the post of Ambassador of Japan to Australia as of April 7 2015.

Before my arrival in Canberra, I was the Ambassador and Consul General at the Consulate-General of Japan in New York. Thirty-four years ago, my first positing overseas was here in Canberra where I stayed for two years (1981-83). This is my second posting to Australia.

Upon returning to Australia after three decades, I can see that a lot has changed since my first posting. What has changed the most has been the incredible growth in Japan and Australia’s relationship. It is described that our relationship has entered a ‘new era’ based on our strategic partnership, particularly on account of Prime Minister Abbott’s visit to Japan, and Prime Minister Abe’s visit to Australia in 2014. Through these visits, both countries agreed on the conclusion of the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) negotiations, the strengthening of defence and technology cooperation, alternating reciprocal annual visits, and the promotion of youth exchange, to cite a few examples.

It is an absolute honour to be posted to Australia for the second time and to assume the post of Ambassador during a time where Japan and Australia enjoy an unprecedented level of strong relations. I am determined to make every effort to contribute to bilateral relations becoming stronger and closer than ever before. To achieve this, I sincerely hope that I have everyone’s kind support and cooperation.

I look forward to meeting everyone in the near future.
