On May 11th, Ambassador Kusaka attended a commemoration ceremony for the 76th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, held at the Australian-American Memorial and hosted by the Canberra branch of the Australian-American Association. Ambassador Kusaka was invited to attend the commemoration ceremony as the representative of the Government of Japan, and so attended this year’s event in that capacity together with his wife.
In addition to Ambassador and Madam Kusaka, the ceremony was attended on the Australian side by Governor-General His Excellency General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Senator the Hon. Zed Seselja (representing the Prime Minister of Australia), Shadow Assistant Minister for Cyber Security and Defence Personnel Gai Brodtmann MP (representing the Leader of the Federal Opposition), Chief of the Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, Secretary of the Department of Defence Mr Greg Moriarty, and US Charge d’Affaires Mr James Caruso. The ceremony itself featured speeches and the laying of wreaths, and was attended by members of the veterans community, current defence personnel, and local primary school children representing Australia’s future generations.
Ambassador Kusaka’s speech featured the following remarks “Japan wishes to express its sincerest condolences to the souls of the deceased of that conflict. Japan is resolutely resolved to never again repeat the tragedy of war, for it emerged after the war as a free, democratic and peaceful nation, governed by the rule of law. Australia and the United States, by opening up the path to Japan for reconciliation with the postwar global community, made an invaluable contribution to the peace and prosperity that we now enjoy. This is something that we Japanese shall never forget. We again express our gratitude to the generosity of spirit of the Australian people, who value the path that our postwar nation has taken. We stand side by side as allies and partners as we strive to ensure the continued peace and stability of the region and the global community”.
