Visit to Australia by Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, visited Canberra on Tuesday, November 23, and held meetings with Dr. Craig Emerson, Minister for Trade; Mr. Kevin Rudd, Minister for Foreign Affairs; Mr. Stephen Smith, Minister for Defence; and Ms. Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia.

Visit to the Australian War Memorial by Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

Minister Maehara visited the Australian War Memorial on Tuesday, November 23 and placed a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. He also paid a visit to the statue of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop, an ex-prisoner of war. In a joint press conference later that day, Minister Maehara said, "There are some 22,000 people who were prisoners of war during the Second World War. I wanted to take the opportunity to express my feeling of apology towards those people by visiting the statue of Sir Dunlop."

Professor Shujiro Urata speech at ANU

UratasenseiProfessor Shujiro Urata from Waseda University was invited by the Embassy of Japan to speak in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. In Canberra on Fri 19 Nov, with cooperation from Crawford School, he spoke at ANU about "Regional Economic Integration in East Asia and Japan's FTA Strategy". The speech covered a wide range of academic ideas applicable to the current FTA/EPA and TPP discussions between Australia and Japan. According to a survey conducted at the end of the speech, the audience had great interest in what the Professor had to say.

Japanese Film Festival 2010

The Japanese Film Festival will be held from 10th Nov to 21st Nov at ARC Cinema, with spectacular new films including historilac action epics, thrillers, anime, powerful dramas, and special school screenings. The opening film "About Her Brother" by award-winning director Yoji Yamada is a free screening (bookings through NFSA essential).

East meets West Concert 10

Aiko Goto (violin), Christopher Moore (viola)and Julian Thompson (cello), who are members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, will perform at the Ambassador's residence Saturday 13 November 2010 to help raise funds for the Australia-Japan Society student exchange program. Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On October 13, Wednesday, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Seiji Maehara had a meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia Kevin Rudd, at the Minister’s reception room for about 50 minutes from 5:25 p.m. Mr. Rudd visited Japan on his way to the Friends of Democratic Pakistan Meeting in Brussels.

Japan-Australia Defence Ministers' Meeting

Minister for Defense of Japan, Mr. Toshimi Kitazawa and his Australian counterpart, Mr. Stephen Smith held a bilateral meeting on the 11th of October in Ha Noi to discuss defence cooperation, the regional situation and other relevant matters.
