2022 Autumn Conferment of Decorations Ceremony for Professor Paul Dibb

On 3 February 2023, in recognition of his contribution to promoting cooperative relations in the field of defence between Japan and Australia, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, was conferred upon Emeritus Professor of the Australian National University, Professor Paul Dibb AM, as part of the Autumn 2022 Foreign National Decorations.
Ambassador YAMAGAMI offered words of praise for Professor Dibb and his outstanding contribution, including compiling the historic Dibb Report that laid the foundation for cooperation between our respective defence agencies. He also initiated the first strategic dialogue with Japan, the only one Japan had with any country other than the United States, in the 1990s. He has also continuously advocated for the strategic importance of Japan-Australia defence cooperation since the 2000s, reflecting the changed environment surrounding Australia. Professor Dibb then returned the compliment in his speech, by extending his heartfelt appreciation to the participants, his colleagues with whom he has worked to deepen the Japan-Australia relationship, his family and Ambassador Yamagami.
