On 20 September 2023, the late Professor Carol Hayes of the Australian National University received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, as part of the 2022 Conferment of Decorations in recognition of her contribution to enhancing mutual understanding and academic exchange between Japan and Australia.
The ceremony took place at the Ambassador’s Residence in a friendly atmosphere with Professor Hayes’s family, friends and colleagues from ANU. Ambassador SUZUKI praised Professor Hayes’s outstanding contributions through her leadership in the academic fields of Japanese language and culture in Australia.
