On the 6th of August Ambassador SUZUKI made a courtesy call on the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC. The Ambassador attended with dignitaries from Nara Prefecture, Japan, who were visiting for the commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of the Cowra Breakout (mass outbreak by Japanese Prisoners of War); Mr Iwao HORII Member of the House of Councilors, and Mr Taihan TSUJIMURA Chief Priest of Saidaiji Temple and Mr Sachio SEMMOTO Co-Founder of KDDI, along with their spouses.
The attendees recognised the achievements of Father Tony Glynn and Cowra City’s role in postwar reconciliation between Japan and Australia. They also discussed the Canberra-Nara Sister City relationship, as well as the strong Japan-Australia relationship of today in politics, economics, security, tourism and more, considering future areas of possibility for Japan-Australia cooperation.
