2017 Japan Self Defence Force Day Reception

2017/6/21
Speech by Ambassador Kusaka
Honorary guest speech by Rear Admiral Michael Noonan AM, RAN
On the 23rd of May, the Embassy of Japan played host to the ‘Japan Self Defence Force Day Reception’. This reception is an annual event that commemorates the formation of the Japan Self Defence Force. Invitees are predominantly drawn from defence and security related institutions, and the reception aims to contribute to a further strengthening of the relationship between Japan and Australia.

This year’s reception saw many guests from Australian government departments such as the Department of Defence and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, along with guests from the Australian Defence Force, defence industries, and academia. For the second year running, the Embassy also hosted an exhibition by Japan’s defence-related industries.

At the reception, following a speech from Ambassador Kusaka, Deputy Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Michael Noonan AM, RAN gave the honorary guest speech, after which the anthems of both countries were performed.

The exhibition by Japan’s defence-related industries revealed to guests the high level of technical skill and measures related to defence equipment possessed by Japan, and deepened the level of understanding of those areas among Australian government affiliated guests and representatives from Australia’s premier-level industries.

In order to contribute to the promotion of future Japan-Australia defence equipment and technology co-operation, exhibits and explanations of defence equipment centered on material and technology with diverse potential. At the exhibition, various Japanese companies demonstrated the appeal of Japan’s high-level technology to representatives of Australia’s defence industries using models, the distribution of pamphlets, and a corner dedicated to a display of actual tests of equipment capabilities.

Beneath gorgeous early winter skies, invited guests greatly enjoyed Japanese cuisine and beverages in the Ambassador’s residential garden, all the while deepening both their relationship with and their understanding of Japan.
