Ambassador’s Official Visit to Tasmania
2016/10/11
Ambassador Sumio Kusaka paid an official visit to the state of Tasmania from the 27th to 29th of September. In Hobart, he met and exchanged opinions with government officials and other figures in the state, including: Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AM, Governor of Tasmania; the Hon Elise Archer MP, Speaker of the House of Assembly; and Alderman Ron Christie, Deputy Lord Mayor of Hobart. Ambassador Kusaka also visited a range of businesses exporting products to Japan and toured their facilities. These included shipbuilders and farms producing cherries, salmon and other animal products.
This visit provided an important opportunity for Ambassador Kusaka to heighten awareness of the close ties that exist between Japan and the state of Tasmania. Key aspects of the trip included highlighting the sister city relationship of Yaizu city and Hobart city—which will next year mark its 40th anniversary—as well as emphasising the robust economic ties of Japan and Tasmania, which are reflected in Japan’s substantial imports of Tasmanian agricultural, forestry and fishery products, as well as aluminum produced in the state. The trip also enabled Ambassador Kusaka to reaffirm the significance of the longstanding co-operation occurring between Japanese and Tasmanian educational institutions. Building on the outcomes of this visit, Ambassador Kusaka will make every effort to further promote and consolidate the valuable relationship between Japan and the state of Tasmania.
