Sunwolves vs Brumbies Reception hosted by Ambassador
2016/6/2
On Sunday 29th of May, Ambassador Kusaka and Mrs Kusaka hosted a reception at the Ambassador’s Residence seizing the opportunity of the Super Rugby match between the Sunwolves and Brumbies at the GIO stadium the day before. The reception included players from the Japanese and Canberra Super Rugby teams, along with senior management including Japan SR Association CEO Mr Yuichi Ueno, members of commonwealth government departments (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Department of Health Office of Sport), ACT government, Japanese business representatives, and members of Japan friendship groups.
The Ambassador said during his speech that he looks forward to the future success of the Sunwolves, which are the only team from Japan having joined the Super Rugby league this year along with the Argentinean team. As Japan will be hosting the 2019 Rugby World Cup as well as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Games, he hope that Japan and Australia will work collaboratively together to pursue a deeper relationship in rugby as well as other sports over the next 3 years.
Japan SR Association CEO Mr Yuichi Ueno (Sunwolves CEO) said that the Sunwolves were formed in last September and had a very short preparation time. Despite this, the players and coaches have been performing well. He hopes that the team will keep improving towards the next season and become a stronger team. He would like everyone to expect greater success from the Sunwolves.
Brumbies Board President Mr Brown said that it was an honour to host the Sunwolves and have their first match in Canberra and congratulated the effort of the Sunwolves. He also said that he looks forward to the match hosted by the Sunwolves in Tokyo next year.
At the end of the ceremony, the Sunwolves captain Mr Shota Horie presented Sunwolves neckties to the Brumbies captain.
The Embassy of Japan would like to promote sports interaction between Japan and Australia wholeheartedly by collaborating with the Australian government and sports organisations in the lead up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Games.
