MEXT Scholarship


The Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology - MEXT) offers the following scholarships to Australian Citizens who wish to study at Japanese universities.

Undergraduate Category 2020 (CLOSED)

​The scholarship is offered in principle for five years, including one year preparatory study of the Japanese language.  There are opportunities to study in a variety of areas of the Social Sciences and Humanities or Natural Sciences.  Upon completion of their courses, students will be awarded a Bachelor's degree. Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares, an allowance of ¥117,000 per month (subject to change) and health care insurance.

Eligibility
Applicants, in principle, must be born on or after April 2, 1995 and must hold Australian citizenship. Details can be found on the Application Guidelines under section 5.

Fields of study
Applicants who wish to major in the Social Sciences and/or Humanities are required to take exams in Mathematics, English and Japanese. Applicants who wish to major in the Natural Sciences are required to take exams in Mathematics, English, Japanese and two subjects selected from Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology depending on their chosen area of study (Five subjects in total).

Examinations and Interview
Examinations will take place on Wednesday 3 July 2019 (TBC) and a mandatory interview for short-listed applicants will be conducted in late July – early August 2019 (TBA).
 
Examinations and interviews will be conducted at the Embassy of Japan, Canberra and at Consulates-General of Japan in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.  Other examination locations in Australia may also be considered after reviewing applications.  Travel expenses to and from exam venues are to be covered by the applicant. Due to time restraints, please inform the Scholarship Advisor if you wish to sit the examination in an alternate city before submitting your complete application. Please note if there are not sufficient numbers your request may not be met.

Results
Successful applicants will be notified in January 2020 and depart for Japan in April 2020.

Research Category 2020 (CLOSED)

The scholarship is offered for two years, which includes six months of preparatory study of the Japanese language starting in April 2020. If no preparatory study of the Japanese language is required, the scholarship shall start in either April or October 2020 for the duration of 18 months or two years. Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares to Japan and an allowance of ¥143,000 per month (subject to change) and health care insurance.
 
Eligibility
Applicants, in principle, must have been born on or after April 2, 1985 and must possess Australian citizenship. Details can be found on the Application Guidelines under section 3.
 
Examinations and Interview
All applicants must sit for the Japanese and English language exams.

Teacher Training Students Category 2019 (CLOSED)

  • The scholarship is offered to teachers of primary school, high school or college level and who have more than five year of teaching experience as of 1 October 2019. (Tertiary teachers are not eligible to apply).
  • The term of scholarship is only for the period required to complete your course and must occur between October 2019 and March 2021.
  • Applicants must have been born on or after 2 April 1984 and must hold Australian citizenship.
  • Applicants are required to take Japanese and English exams and must demonstrate a sufficient level of Japanese language ability to be able to receive research guidance in Japanese.
  • Examinations will take place on Tuesday 12 March 2019 (TBC).
  • Examinations will be conducted at the Embassy of Japan, Canberra and at the Consulates-General of Japan in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.  After reviewing applications other examination venues may also be considered.  Travel expenses to and from exam venues are to be covered by the applicant. Please indicate your preferred city to sit for the exam if you reside outside of any of the above mentioned cities by sending an email to the Embassy as soon as possible.
  • Benefits include return airfares and an allowance of ¥143,000 per month (Subject to change).

Japanese Studies Category 2019 (CLOSED)

  • The scholarship is offered to foreign university undergraduate students who major in a field related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture, for the duration of one year from October 2019.
  • Applicants must have been born between 2 April 1989 and 1 April 2001 and must hold Australian citizenship.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a sufficient level of Japanese language ability to be able to receive an education in Japanese.
  • Examinations will take place on Tuesday 12 March 2019 (TBC).
  • Examinations will be conducted at the Embassy of Japan, Canberra and at the Consulates-General of Japan in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.  After reviewing applications other examination venues may also be considered.  Travel expenses to and from exam venues are to be covered by the applicant. Please indicate your preferred city to sit for the exam if you reside outside of any of the above mentioned cities by sending an email to the Embassy as soon as possible.
