Undergraduate Category
The Undergraduate scholarship is offered in principle for 5 years, including 1 year of preparatory study of the Japanese language and other subjects. There are opportunities to study in a variety of areas of the Social Sciences and Humanities or Natural Sciences.
Upon successful completion of their courses, students will be awarded a Bachelor's degree.
Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares and a monthly allowance of 117,000 Yen (amount subject to change).
Eligibility
Applicants must possess Australian citizenship and be born on or after April 2, 1999. Applicants must have completed 12 years of education or graduated from the equivalent of a Japanese Senior High School (ie. finished Year 12) by March 2024.
Fields of study
Applicants who wish to major in the Social Sciences and/or Humanities are required to take exams in Mathematics, English and Japanese. (3 subjects in total)
Applicants who wish to major in the Natural Sciences are required to take exams in Mathematics, English, Japanese, Chemistry and either Physics or Biology depending on your nominated area of study (5 subjects in total).
Those who successfully pass the examinations will be required to undertake an online interview.

Research Category
The Research scholarship is offered for graduate-level studies. (A 6-month Japanese language preparatory course will be offered if deemed necessary.)
Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares to Japan and a monthly allowance of 143,000 Yen (amount subject to change).
Eligibility
Applicants must possess Australian citizenship, be born on or after April 2 1989 and hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree.
Examination and Interview
All applicants must sit the Japanese language exam.
Those who successfully pass the examinations will be required to undertake an online interview.

Teacher Training Students Category
Available to teachers who were born on or after April 2 1988, and have graduated from a university or Teachers' College and have 5 years+ of teaching experience.
- This scholarship is offered to teachers of primary school, high school or college level who have a total period of five years or more of teaching experience as of 1 October 2023. (Tertiary teachers are not eligible to apply).
- The term of scholarship is only for the period required to complete your course and must occur between October 2023 and March 2025.
- Applicants must return to their home country by the end of the final month of the scholarship period and resume their work as a teacher.
- Applicants must have been born on or after April 2 1988 and must hold Australian citizenship.
- Applicants must have graduated from university or teacher training college.
- Applicants are required to take Japanese and English exams and must demonstrate a sufficient level of Japanese language ability to be able to receive research guidance in Japanese.
- Language examinations will take place on Wednesday 1 March 2023 (TBC).
- Examinations will be conducted at the Embassy of Japan in Canberra and at the Consulates-General of Japan in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. After reviewing applications other examination venues may also be considered. Travel expenses to and from exam venues are borne by the applicant. Please indicate your preferred city to sit for the exam if you reside outside of any of the above-mentioned cities by sending an email to the Embassy as soon as possible.
- Those who pass the exams may be asked to attend an interview in mid-March 2023 (TBC).
- Benefits include return airfares and an allowance of ¥143,000 per month (Subject to change).

Japanese Studies Category
Available to current undergraduate university students majoring in Japanese or Japanese culture who were born between April 2, 1993 and April 1, 2005. Applicants must have already completed one year or more of Japanese studies by the time of departure.
- The scholarship is offered to foreign university undergraduate students who major in a field related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture, for the duration of one year from September or October 2023.
- Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1993 and April 1, 2005 and must hold Australian citizenship.
- Applicants must be current university students and must return to study at the same university to continue their studies in Japanese language and/or Japanese culture upon their return to Australia after the program.
- Applicants must major in fields related to the Japanese language and/or Japanese culture.
- Applicants must have studied the Japanese Studies at a university for a total period of one year or more as of September 1, 2023.
- Applicants must demonstrate a sufficient level of Japanese language ability to be able to receive an education in Japanese.
- Examinations will take place on Wednesday 1 March 2023 (TBC).
