The Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology - MEXT) offers the following scholarships to Australian Citizens who wish to study at Japanese universities.

Undergraduate Category (2025 applications)

The Undergraduate scholarship is offered in principle for 5 years, including 1 year of preparatory study of the Japanese language and other subjects. There are opportunities to study in a variety of areas of the Social Sciences and Humanities or Natural Sciences. 


Please note that for those who choose “Social Sciences and Humanities”, if MEXT judges that they have sufficient Japanese language ability, etc., they will be directly placed in a university without going through preparatory education.

Upon successful completion of their courses, students will be awarded a Bachelor's degree.

Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares and a monthly allowance of 117,000 Yen (amount subject to change).

Eligibility
Applicants must possess Australian citizenship and be born on or after 2 April 2000. Applicants must have completed 12 years of education or graduated from the equivalent of a Japanese Senior High School (ie. finished Year 12) by March 2025. 

Fields of study
Applicants who wish to major in the Social Sciences and/or Humanities are required to take exams in Mathematics, English and Japanese. (3 subjects in total)

Applicants who wish to major in the Natural Sciences are required to take exams in Mathematics, English, Japanese, Chemistry and either Physics or Biology depending on your nominated area of study (5 subjects in total).

Research Category (2025 applications)

The Research scholarship is offered for graduate-level studies. (A six month Japanese language preparatory course will be offered if deemed necessary.)

Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares to Japan and a monthly allowance of 143,000 Yen (amount subject to change).

Eligibility
Applicants must possess Australian citizenship, be born on or after 2 April 1990 and hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree.
 
Examination and Interview
All applicants who pass the documents selection stage are required to sit the Japanese language exam in Australia.
Those who progress to the interview stage will be required to undertake an interview. Shortlisted candidates will be informed of the date and format of the interview at a later date.

Teacher Training Students Category

MEXT offers scholarships to teachers outside of Japan who wish to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities as "Teacher Training Students" under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program.
 
Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares to Japan and a monthly allowance of 143,000 Yen (amount subject to change).
 
The time period covered by the scholarship is the necessary period for the completion of the accepting university’s training course, which should be between October 2024 (or the starting month of the course) and March 2026.
 
Eligibility
  • Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1989 and must hold Australian citizenship.
  • Applicants must be graduates of universities or teacher training schools and have worked as teachers at primary/secondary educational institutions or teacher training schools (excluding universities) in their home countries for a total period of five years or more as of October 1, 2024. In-service faculty members in a higher education institution are not eligible.
  • Applicants must assure that they return to their home country by the end of the final month of the scholarship period and resume their work as a teacher at his/her primary/secondary educational institution or teacher training school. Applicants shall utilize the results of their research on school education in Japan. If a grantee does not satisfy both conditions, he/she may be ordered to return the entire amount of the scholarship paid during the scholarship period. Those who are uncertain about returning and resuming their work after the end of the scholarship period should not apply for this program.  
  • Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese. Applicants must be interested in Japan and be willing to deepen their understanding of Japan after arriving in Japan. Applicants must also have the ability to do research and adapt to living in Japan.
 
Examination and Interview
All applicants must sit the Japanese and English language exams on Thursday 22nd February 2024 (TBC).
Those who successfully pass the examinations will be required to undertake an in-person interview on Tuesday 5th March 2024 (TBC).
Travel expenses to and from exam and interview venues are borne by the applicant.

Japanese Studies Students Category

MEXT offers scholarships to students outside of Japan who wish to study for a period of one year from September or October 2024 at designated Japanese universities as "Japanese Studies Students" in order to deepen their understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese affairs and Japanese culture under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program.
 
Benefits of the scholarship include all tuition fees, return airfares to Japan and a monthly allowance of 117,000 Yen (amount subject to change).

Eligibility
  • Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1994 and April 1 2006, and must hold Australian citizenship.
  • Applicants must major in fields related to the Japanese language and/or Japanese culture.
  • Applicants must have studied Japanese Studies at a university for a total period of one year or more as of September 1, 2024.
  • Applicants must assure that they return to their home country by the end of the final month of the scholarship period and continue to study Japanese language and culture at the undergraduate program of the institution in which applicants were enrolled at the time of the arrival in Japan. However, if the grantees can keep taking the course of their institution with staying in Japan, for example, by participating in Double Degree program or Joint Degree program with their institution’s partner universities in Japan, they don’t necessarily have to return to their home country. If a grantee does not satisfy these conditions, he/she may be ordered to return the entire amount of the scholarship paid during the scholarship period. Those who are uncertain about satisfying conditions mentioned above should not apply for this program.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a sufficient level of Japanese language ability to be able to receive an education in Japanese.
 
Examination and Interview
All applicants must sit the Japanese language exam on Thursday 22nd February 2024 (TBC).
Those who successfully pass the examinations will be required to undertake an in-person interview on Tuesday 5th March 2024 (TBC).
