1. How to apply at the Embassy for Canberra residents

If you live in Canberra, bring the documents listed below to the Embassy between 9:00-12:00 or 14:00-16:30 on weekdays. 

  • You do not need an appointment to come. 
  • Do not staple your documents. We do not offer any printing service.
  • We may ask for extra documents to support your application.
  • If you live outside the ACT in surrounding NSW you may still be able to apply here; please confirm with us if unsure.
  • Processing time is a minimum of one week (5 working days). 
  • Your visa will last for entry for 3 months from issuance, so you can apply for up to three months ahead of your trip. 
     

2. If you live in another part of Australia

If you live somewhere else than Canberra, please check the visa information page according to where you live.

We recommend to check a few months ahead of your trip where you should apply and confirm the visa processing time and method. 
 

3. If you have an Australian passport

Australian passport holders do not need a visa to enter Japan if you are visiting for purposes like tourism, business or transit, for less than 90 days.

You can check Japan's visa exemption page for more details and to see if your passport is from a country or region that can be exempt.

To use visa exemption: 
For people holding passports that can use the visa exemption scheme, you can fill out a disembarkation card when you register for Visit Japan Web, or fill out a disembarkation card at the airport.

If you do not hold a passport that can use visa exemption: Please read on for visa application advice.
 

4a. Documents for: Holiday, visiting friends or relatives (up to 90 days)

1. Completed visa application form (please fill out every field or mark N/A if the question is not applicable) (Sample) 

2. A 45mm ×35mm (or approximate size) ID/passport photograph taken in the last 6 months 

  • Please provide evidence of when the photograph was taken such as a receipt 

3. Valid passport & copy of passport photo page

4. Evidence of valid Australian long-term visa (your VEVO page, NOT Visa Grant Notifcation)

  • Residential visa holders such as Permanent Residency, Student, Temporary Graduate visa etc. can apply. We cannot accept visa applications from Tourist or Visitor visa holders (e.g Visa Subclass 600)

5. Itinerary (template) with simple daily activity plan and hotel information filled in

  • Please use the "Itinerary" Template provided above.
  • If you are staying with a friend rather than a hotel, please provide copies of their passport and residence card.

6. Flight details in English or Japanese with your passport name

  • Full flight ticket OR booking from an accredited travel agent or airline for your trip from Australia to Japan, including visits to third countries on the way to Japan and back
  • Provide copies of visas if you are visiting third countries
  • We are not responsible for tickets which may become unusable due to the delay or denial of a visa
  • If you are returning to your home country after your trip to Japan, you don’t need to show a flight booking back to Australia. ​

7. A three month bank statement, no older than 1 month, with your full name and enough funds for your trip

8. Copy of Student ID  (if you have one)
 

  • If you are not paying for your own trip, please provide a Letter of Guarantee from the Japanese person who will pay for your trip. If you guarantor does not live in Japan and you are applying in Canberra, please contact us to confirm what documents you should provide instead.  
  • Nationals of Russia, CIS countries and Georgia need to submit 2 visa application forms and 2 photos.
     

4b. Documents for: Business (up to 90 days)

In addition to the documents for 4a., please provide: 

1. An original letter on company letterhead from the applicant's Australian company which must include the nature of the business trip, the applicant's position, schedule, length of stay. 

  •  If your company in Australia is covering your trip expenses, the letter should include details of their financial responsibility for the expenses  incurred (flight, travel expenses and accommodation) during the trip.
  •  If the Japanese side is covering your expenses, please prepare a letter of guarantee and a certified copy of the incorporation register or an overview of the company/organization.
  •  If you are covering your own trip expenses, please bring a three month bank statement, no older than 1 month, with your full name and enough funds for your trip

2. Certificate of Employment (work contract)
3. An original letter of invitation from the company in Japan.

 

4c. Documents for: attending an academic conference (Up to 90 days)

In addition to the documents for 4a., please provide: 

1. An original letter from the home institution (university, etc.) on letterhead explaining the conference, relevant dates, applicant's position (name, nationality and passport number), and the length of stay.
  • If your institute is covering your flight, travel expenses and accommodation arrangements for the trip, please include this in the letter.
  • If you are covering your own trip expenses, please bring a three month bank statement, no older than 1 month, with your full name and enough funds for your trip
2. Details of the conference (schedule, purpose, etc.)
3. A letter of invitation or paid registration form from the conference organizer in Japan
4. Certificate of Employment (work contract) from your institution
 

5. Multi-Entry Visas

For information on multi-entry visas, please check the Ministry of Foreign Affair's visa page according to your country, then contact us to confirm documents (if you are an ACT resident).

Generally, you will need to provide:

  • Proof of financial capability to support a multi-entry visa (e.g. savings, shares, payslips and other assets)
  • A brief letter explaining your reason to apply for a multi-entry visa
