2023/4/28
All travellers should confirm the current procedure of entry to Japan.

1. How to apply at the Embassy for Canberra residents

If you live in Canberra (or surrounds; please confirm with us if unsure), bring the documents listed below to the Embassy between 9:00-12:00 or 14:00-16:30 on weekdays. You do not require an appointment.

Do not staple any of your documents. We do not offer any printing service, and may request further documents as necessary.

2. If you live in another part of Australia

If you live somewhere else than Canberra, please check the list to confirm your local diplomatic mission and check their website for how to apply. You should apply for the mission appropriate to where you live. We recommend to check a few months ahead of your trip where you should apply and confirm the visa processing time.

3. If you have an Australian passport

All applicants should visit Japan's visa exemption scheme page to check whether they need to apply for a visa to travel to Japan.
Some nationalities, such as Australians (and passport holders of 68 other countries and regions), do not require a visa to enter Japan if you are entering for purposes like tourism, business or transit for less than 90 days.

For people holding passports eligible for visa exemption, you can fill out a disembarkation card as part of your registration for Visit Japan Web, or fill out a disembarkation card at the airport.

If you do not hold a passport valid for visa exemption, please read on for application advice.
